Don Scholl, who represents Area 5 of the Manteca Unified School District, is the new face at the helm of the Board of Trustees.

He was appointed president of the board, succeeding Trustee Evelyn Moore, who was named vice president. Michael Seelye, who was appointed to his second term without going through the re-election process in November for lack of a challenger, is now the clerk of the board.

This changing of the guard is all part of the musical chairs that the board goes through every year. The board’s first meeting in December likewise saw two new faces – Sam Fant who represents Area 1 in Weston Ranch, and Deborah Romero. Fant won the three-way race in the November elections, defeating Alison Ordner and Sharla Moore. He succeeds Rex Holiday, who did not seek re-election, opting instead to finish his doctorate studies. Romero, who represents Area 5, succeeded Wendy King, who also chose not to run for another four-year term on the board. Like Seelye, Romero did not have to do any campaigning because she was the only candidate for the post.

The rest of the seven-panel board whose tenures will end in 2014 are Manuel Medeiros of Area 2, and Nancy Teicheira of Area 4. Scholl and Moore of Area 5 will also have their terms expire in 2014.

Christmas break for schools begin Dec. 21

Meanwhile, all schools in Manteca Unified will be closed for the winter break starting Friday, until Monday, Jan. 7, 2013. That day, however, will be a working day for all district school teachers. The official first day of school for students will be Tuesday, Jan. 8.
