Manteca High’s boys basketball team couldn’t slow down Ashur Athneil, and Johansen held off the Buffaloes to win Monday’s opening-round contest 53-46 in the Tracy/West Winter Holiday Classic.

Athneil drilled five 3-pointers and poured in 30 points, as the Vikings (3-6) shot out to a 32-16 lead. Manteca (4-4), led by Miguel Lopez’s 10 fourth-quarter points, staged a threatening run in the second half but came up short. Michael Hatfield scored 15 points to lead to pace the Buffaloes, who take on Central Valley of Ceres in the consolation bracket starting at 3 today at West.

Also Monday, Lathrop fell to Enochs 66-41 at Tracy High, setting up a consolation showdown with first-year Excel Academy. Isaiah Ellis had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans (3-6).
