Hormone replacement just got personal

Over the last 100 years, middle-aged men and women have doubled their life expectancy. The soft tissue glands which create hormones are being forced to produce longer than before. The added stress, worsening nutrition and lack of proper fitness combine to result in declining levels of hormones in their bodies that can interfere with their lives.

As women age, their bodies produce smaller amounts of estrogen and progestin. During the menopausal years, the changes in hormone levels may result in adverse symptoms, the most notable of which are hot flashes, night sweat, vaginal atrophy and difficulty sleeping.

Many middle aged men experience a growth hormone and testosterone loss.  During the andropause years, also known as male menopause, the changes in hormone levels result in low libido, muscle loss or weakness, and hair loss.

Going through middle age does not have to be an unpleasant transition.  Bioidentical hormones are available to replace the imbalances of estrogen and testosterone levels.  Celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Suzane Somers have brought bioidentical HRT onto center stage, and now Turlock native and Tower Compounding Pharmacy owner Darin Nelle is recommending its use.

“Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, is a natural molecule-for-molecule match of the hormones naturally produced by your body,” said Nelle.  “Once administered in your body, these bio-identical hormones work to correct the imbalances in your systems and help you overcome the most common symptoms of menopause in women or testosterone loss in men.”

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has been used for nearly 25 years, and many patients have had great success with it, according to Nelle.  There are many different forms of bioidentical HRT that work in a variety of ways.  Because each woman responds differently according to her unique physiology, every prescription is customized to the patient.

Bioidentical hormones are applied via a cream, a suppository, taken orally or are injected.  Prescriptions are based on a series of tests administered by a doctor.

“Although bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has been around for many years, many practitioners are unfamiliar with it,” said Nelle.  “Here at Tower Compounding Pharmacy we work with physicians to get them educated about the product and make it more accessible to our patients.”

Tower Compounding Pharmacy offers public seminars on BHRT for both men and women that a free hormone test through a simple saliva test that gives a patient his/her hormone levels.

“A combination of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, along with proper nutrition and exercise, will return men and women to the optimal mental, physical, emotional and sexual health of their earlier years,” said Nelle.
