According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25.8 million people in the United States (8.3% of the population) have diabetes. An additional 79 million are estimated to have prediabetes, a condition of elevated blood glucose levels that are not yet high enough to be considered diabetic.

With type 2 diabetes, which affects over 90 percent of people with diabetes, the body loses its sensitivity to insulin. Diet and exercise play a large role in insulin sensitivity and blood sugar levels so many people with type 2 diabetes can control their diabetes by following a healthy meal plan and exercise program. If you would like to learn more about preventing or controlling diabetes through diet and exercise, the Live Well Be Well Center at Sonora Regional Medical Center offers nutritional counseling, exercise classes and diabetes support groups for you to learn ways to take control of your health.  Call 209-536-3727 to learn more.
