Youth are being asked to design posters aimed at discouraging their peers from joining gangs.
The Mayors Committee on the Arts is offering combined awards of $1,100 plus pizza gift certificates.
The competition is open through Feb 13. Entries can be dropped off at the Parks and Recreation Department, 252 Magnolia Ave., Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Judging takes place Feb. 17. The awards will be presented during a reception on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The entries will be displayed from Feb. 23 through April 18 at the Manteca Senior Center, Manteca City Council chambers, the Parks and Recreation office, Manteca High, Lincoln School, Manteca Day School, Sequoia School, Guido’s Pizza, and various downtown Manteca businesses.
All posters will be available for sale for $50 to anyone interested in purchasing them. Of that, $25 will go to the artist and $25 to the police chief’s anti-gang fund. Parent and student written authorization will be needed prior to any sale.
There is no entry fee. The minimum size is 11 by 14 inches and the maximum is 14 by 17 inches.
No gang favoritism such as symbols, colors, or drawings will be accepted as part of entries. Each student is limited to one entry. Mediums allowed are acrylic, watercolor, pastel, oil, charcoal, ink, pencil or original computer-generated art.
To enter you have to be a Manteca Unified School District student. There are six age groups starting with kindergarten-first grade and going through junior-senior in high school.
Best of show of all entries receives $100. First place in all six categories receives $50 each, second place in each category $25 apiece, while third place receives pizza gift certificates.
There also will be a $50 community choice award.
