SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The California Cougars Under-19 soccer team finished fifth overall at the West Coast FC Classic soccer tournament last weekend in Orange County.

The Cougars opened with a 3-0 win over the San Diego Spirit in which Sierra High’s Lacey Vaughan scored a pair of goals. Marena O’Leary added a third.

Vaughan’s Timberwolf teammate, Rebecca Scott, had an assist, as did Valeria Ordaz and Alexis Poppoff.

Keeper Brianna Murawski turned in the clean sheet thanks in part to solid defensive efforts from Scott, Karly Dunning, Amie Gillett, Sarah Manseau, Michelle Russell, Alyssa Strope and Melissa Worthington.

Up next was a 1-1 tie with the Claremont Stars. Poppoff scored the Cougars’ lone goal.

Murawski added a second shutout in game three, a scoreless tie with the Slammers FC G91 North.

The Cougars open NorCal Premier Fall League play in September.

Lil Mustangs vs. Starfish

The Manteca Area Soccer League Under-6 Starfish met the Lil Mustangs Friday at Woodward Park.

A number of players scored goals, including Gwenyth Rhoten, Kylie Mendez, Corinne Stackpole, Natasha Flores, Emilie Holmes and Marissa Soza.

On defense, Ashley Coulter, Realyn Driscoll and Cassandra Soza shined.

Both the Lil Mustangs and Starfish turned in sterling efforts.
