ESCALON — San Joaquin County’s first murder of 2013 may have taken place along River Road south of Escalon and midway between Ripon and Oakdale.

The California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a crash at 3:40 a.m. New Year’s Day in the 25800 block of River Road. They ended up discovering the body of a deceased female some 60 feet away from an abandoned vehicle on River Road in Escalon.

Officers found the body of the female down an embankment with obvious signs of death apparently resulting from “severe trauma,” Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Les Garcia said Wednesday afternoon.

The spot where the body was found is about a quarter mile east of McHenry Avenue and near the Stanislaus River. The idyllic stretch of River Road has several country homes as well as family farms that are primarily planted in orchards.

Sheriff’s detectives have taken over the investigation and have ruled the case to be a homicide.  Garcia said the identity of the victim is pending the notification to the next of kin.  The actual cause of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology results, he said.

Anyone with information on the case that will result in the arrest and conviction of the responsible or responsible parties may call South County Crime Stoppers, remain anonymous, and collect up to $1,000. The number is 823-4636.
