The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Manteca is just over three months away.

You can get involved by attending the next meeting at the Strike Zone Bowling Alley on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m.  Team sign-ups and general Relay information will be provided at the meeting.

Former and current cancer patients and caretakers, those who have lost a loved one to cancer, families, businesses, civic organizations and the public are invited to take part in this exciting team event. Relay for Life takes place April 20- 21 at East Union High School. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a family-oriented event where participants enjoy the camaraderie of a team and also raise funds to help eliminate cancer. Participants camp out at the Relay site, and when they are not taking their turn walking, they take part in fun activities and enjoy local entertainment. The event helps communities celebrate those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

Teams from companies, churches, organizations, hospitals, and schools collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts.

“Relay for Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront,” said Kim Bettencourt, event chair. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been not only reducing death rates, but also in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”

“The funds raised enable us to continue our investment in the fight back against cancer through research, education, advocacy, and patient services,” said Bettencourt. “Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors like Strike Zone, the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”

One of the major fundraisers for this year’s event is the Second Annual Tri-Tip Dinner Dance that will be held on Feb. 16 at the Manteca Senior Center.  Last year’s tri-tip was a huge success for 2012 and this year’s committee is hoping to match or exceed last year.  For tickets or additional information, please contact Jessica Smith at (209) 483-7038.  Future fundraising events include Bunko nights, Stockton Thunder tickets, drive-thru dinners, and many more team fundraisers.

Information about how to form a team or become involved in Manteca’s Relay for Life is available from Event Chair, Kim Bettencourt at (209) 609-6992 or online at
