RIPON – The Ripon Christian boys basketball team had yet to face a team with Turlock Christian’s size.

The Eagles boasted a front line anchored by 6-foot-5, 260-pound sophomore Brandy Turner, who was joined by 6-6 Jordan Riise and 6-4 Kameron Vogt.

“We never played a team with that many big men,” Knights coach Ron Vander Molen said.

Ripon Christian took size out of equation with fast-break baskets and strong team defense, turning this battle of the Southern League’s only unbeaten teams into a rout, 60-30.

“We were not crisp on offense,” Vander Molen said. “We had trouble finishing.”

Yet he was pleased with margin of victory.

Paced by senior guard Danny Vos, the Knights (3-0, 11-3) were relentless in attacking the basket despite numerous missed shots.

RC jumped out to a 17-4 lead thanks to Vos, who netted seven of his 12 points in that span. Clayton Blankers, who at 6-6 was the closest to matching Turlock Christian’s size, along with Eric Broker and Jon Vander Molen had two baskets each for the Knights.

Jon Vander Molen, who netted a game-high 20 points, found his range in the second half, hitting a pair 3s in the fourth.

Broker also had 12, while Blankers finished with eight.

Turner was a factor early on for Turlock Christian (2-1, 8-8). He powered his way to 11 points, including nine in the first half. Vogt chipped in with eight while Riise had two.

At the half, RC had a commanding 34-14 lead.

“We played good defense, especially in the second half,” said coach Vander Molen.

He also credited RC’s defense for contributing to Turlock Christian’s offensive woes throughout the game.

Meanwhile, the Knights, who took a 41-23 advantage into the fourth, finished strong with a 21-3 run to close out the game.

“We didn’t have that good of a shooting night,” coach Vander Molen said. “We did come away with a good win.”
