RIPON – In its first stern challenge of the Trans-Valley League season, Ripon High could not keep pace with the hot-shooting Riverbank Bruins in a 61-52 loss Tuesday.

The Bruins gained control of the contest with a searing second-quarter run that saw them nail 6-of-7 3-pointers in succession to distance themselves from the Indians.

Ripon, who came off a blistering performance of its own in their last league win, only made good on two 3-pointers. Riverbank sank 11 in all.

“They really shot the ball well tonight and we pretty much shot out regular,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said. “Turnovers really cost us, we were lazy with the ball and they capitalized.”

Derek Hickman paced Ripon with 12 points, while Cole Herrin (11) and Chase DePrue (10) both finished in double figures for the Indians.

Southern League

Ripon Christian 77, Delhi 27

The Knights opened the game with a 29-1 first-quarter run and never looked back to improve to a perfect 5-0 in Southern League action.

Jon Vander Molen finished with a game-high 20 points, sinking 9-of-12 shots. Junior Eric Booker and senior Dan Vos had 12 apiece for Ripon Christian.

The Knights (5-0, 13-3) will be back on the court Friday when they travel to Gustine to take on the Redskins at 7:15 p.m.

Valley Oak League

Lathrop 53, Oakdale 46

The Spartans overcame a sluggish opening half with a solid third quarter, turning up the defensive pressure and holding Oakdale to six points in route to the VOL win.

Robert Orantes led Lathrop with 16 points, while senior guard Mikey Pereznegron finished in double-figures with 12.

Lathrop (2-3, 6-11) will try and make it back-to-back wins when it hosts the defending league champion Sierra Timberwolves Thursday.

Ripon Christian 65, Delhi 17

The Knights were able to hold Delhi to five points or less in each of the four quarters, cruising to an easy Southern League victory.

Tegan Manus led a quartet of Lady Knights in double figures with 14. Kaylie Colyn added 12, Jenny Wickham had 11 and Kristin Bowman had 10.

Ripon Christian entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 54-15 lead.
