WESTON RANCH – The Weston Ranch High girls basketball team put together a strong all-around effort in Wednesday’s 72-31 Valley Oak League win over visiting East Union.

Brianna White was a tough order from the inside, netting a game-high 29 points.

“We had no answer for her,” said Lancers coach Jim Agostini. “She beat us rolling to the basket. She used the drop step to get around our defense.”

Point guard Aljanea Brown had more assists (12) than points (9), spotting White and the other Weston Ranch “bigs” –  namely, Courtney Smith and Elisabeth Alexander.

“Those were things we worked in practice,” Cougars coach Chris Bauer said.

Weston Ranch (4-1, 9-6) relied mostly on its pressure defense.

White, Emoni Wilson, and Anna Haley were among those wreaking havoc on the Lancers in the open court, causing a number of turnovers.

East Union (2-3, 6-10) fell behind 7-2 from the outset, adding two more when Victoria Vazaldenos scored on an inbound play.

From there, the Cougars slowly pulled away with fastbreak baskets, putback shots, and even a hustle play by Alexander, who was alone under the hoop following an East Union basket.

Wilson, who came off the bench, tallied 15 points, including a 3-pointer shortly before the half.

Ahead 35-16, Weston Ranch continued where it left off in the third. Baskets by White, Wilson, Brown and Candisse Griffen soon broke the game wide open.

What little offense East Union was able to muster was provided by Angelique Cardoza, who had six, and Alyssa Gonnigan and Rosemarie Wood with five points each.

“Obviously, we have to move forward,” Agostini said. “But in the VOL, it doesn’t get easier.”

East Union will take on league-leader Manteca High on Friday.

Victoria Galley hit for 15 to lead the Cougars to victory. Teammates Terese Haley and Keri Loughlin chipped in with nine points each.

Destiny Flores paced the Lancers with nine.
