Getting across Manteca can be a challenge when Union Pacific trains are blocking crossings.

But that will be nothing compared to what’s coming starting Feb. 2. That’s when Union Pacific will start closing one crossing at a time for at least a week for needed replacement of rails and concrete overlays. All of the work is targeted for completion by April 12.

“We expect significant detours that will be clearly marked,” noted Public Works Director Mark Houghton.

There are nine railroad crossings in Manteca: Austin Road, Woodward Avenue, Industrial Park Drive/Spreckels Avenue, Main Street, Center Street, Walnut Avenue, Union Road, Louise Avenue, and Airport Way. All are expected to create inconveniences although the worst traffic issues are expected to happen with the Main Street and Yosemite Avenue crossings. Both already have significant traffic back-ups due to vehicle volume even when the tracks are clear.

The railroad will work closely with the city to coordinate crossing closings. Once they are closed they will not be reopened until work is completed.

City crews will also be tied up on the project. It is the city’s responsibility to repair and replace pavement leading up to the crossing.
