In the coming months, a portion of historic downtown can expect to get a facelift.

A $400,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation will help pave the way for the City of Ripon to install landscape enhancements along Main Street, between Acacia Avenue and Nourse Street.

Work, according to City Engineer Kevin Werner, will include:

• Replacing the existing wood trellises with brick and metal trellises similar to that of the previous phase on Main Street.

• Replacing plants at various planter where needed.

• Retrofitting existing planter pots that have since shifted.

• Improving landscape at the planters located at the entrance of the Main Street parking lot next to the Ripon Roadhouse Restaurant.

“This project is expected to begin construction this summer and be completed within two to three months after the beginning of construction,” Werner said at the Thursday evening open house in the Council Chambers.

He had invited the public and any business folks to come by during that time to provide comments or learn more about the Main Street Phase 2 enhancement project.

“We didn’t have any one opposed to it,” said James Pease in the engineering department.

Part of the reason for that is once work begins the downtown businesses aren’t expected to be affected with street closures, Werner said.

He added that the open house was held in an attempt to get feedback from the public. Werner, Pease, and Councilman Elden ‘Red’ Nutt were on hand.

Ripon was allocated money from Proposition 1B – specifically, a portion of the $663 million of the nearly $14 billion already distributed – a transportation bond approved by voters in 2006.
