Weston Ranch’s soph girls coast past Sierra

The Weston Ranch Cougars sophomore girls basketball team built an early lead and held on for the Valley Oak League victory 51-31 over visiting Sierra High Friday.

The Cougars (6-0 VOL, 15-5 overall) had a balanced scoring attack from most of its starters playing limited minutes. Kelley Laughlin led the way with 15, while Victoria Gulley and Teresa Haley added nine and eight points, respectively. Gulley also pulled down eight rebounds and swiped four steals.

Sierra was led by Haley Silva’s eight points and four steals. Teammates Megan Westphal and Kristen Maestretti both chipped in with six.

The Cougars will have a meeting between the league’s final two undefeated teams when they host Kimball Tuesday.

East Union 27, Manteca 25

Anna Wood’s double-digit effort helped the Lancers edge out the visiting Manteca Buffaloes by a basket Friday in league action.

Wood led the Lancers with 11 points, while teammate Alisa Burola chipped in with five, but pilfered 10 steals on defense.

Manteca got five points apiece from Alysa Burch, Beth Aschenbrenner and Chelsea Gomez. Burch pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the loss.


Sierra 41, Weston Ranch 38

The Cougars fought valiantly, but fell to the Sierra Timberwolves by a bucket Friday in VOL action.

Sierra (6-0, 16-2) got a huge effort from Trayna Davis, who paced the club with 12 points. Devi Coglio also chipped in with nine for Sierra.

Manteca 26, East Union 13

The Buffaloes had little trouble holding off the Lancers, earning the 13-point win Friday in VOL play.

Jade Griffin led Manteca (4-2, 11-3) with nine points.
