Sierra’s girls basketball team did well to hang with the high-octane Cougars of Weston Ranch for a half, but it couldn’t keep up for long in a 71-41 defeat in Stockton.

Weston Ranch (5-1 Valley Oak League, 10-6 overall) was up 25-18 at halftime but turned it on in the third quarter with a 26-10 run.

“We made a couple of adjustments at halftime and challenged the kids to show more heart and effort,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer said. “We came out with more intensity and passion and the second-half score reflected that.”

Briana White recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds to post her second straight double-double. Emoni Wilson added 13, Elisabeth Alexander had 12 and Aaliyah finished with Thomas 11.

Sierra (1-5, 5-13), which dropped its fifth game in a row, was spearheaded by freshmen Katelyn Teixeira’s 16 points and Kayla Wilson’s nine.

Weston Ranch next squares off with Sac-Joaquin Section powerhouse Vanden at 3 today in the Modesto Christian MLK Showcase.
