We are all familiar with Homecoming, the longstanding tradition at every high school that allows for a week of dress up and a taste of being among the local royalty.

But no more!

Well, sort of.

Ripon High introduced Winterfest this week.  Winterfest is a week of skits, dress up and of course, a crowning. Specifically, one boy and one girl from each class are chosen.

And instead of football being the focus, this week shines a light on the hardwood.  Themes have ranged from Peter Pan to Harry Potter and Narnia to Alice in Wonderland, highlighted by Ripon’s basketball games.

Some students think it’s great, some think it’s ridiculous.  Quite frankly many are just confused, and not entirely aware of what is going on until their lab partner turns Mad Hatter.  Nonetheless, many Ripon High students appreciate the diversion of it all.

No one is certain as to whether Winterfest will catch on, whether it will be done next year at all.  But as one student told me, “It’s the first year of this thing.  I don’t think the school will give up after just one try.”

Most student agree that Winterfest will take time to perfect and some wonder if this will be a new tradition or if one day it might develop a status near that of homecoming itself.

The answer clearly: Only time will tell.
