Led by dominant goal scorer Abby Buitrago and a stingy defense anchored by keeper Min Kerr-Schifrin, the Manteca Rangers under-14 girls soccer team rolled to the Cal North Association Cup championship this past weekend in Elk Grove.

The tournament began with three preliminary-round contests played earlier this month in Morgan Hill and resumed with the quarterfinals Jan. 13 in Redding.

Buitrago accounted for 11 of the team’s 12 goals, including two in the Rangers’ championship clincher against the Redding Misfits/Fusion on Sunday.

Skylar Treacy’s throw-in helped set up Buitrago’s first score in the 2-1 victory, and her game-winner in the second half came off connecting passes from Alison Bitle and Tesca Hapig-Ward. Kerr-Schifrin, who had four shutouts in six Association Cup contests, came through with two point-blank stops in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.

In Saturday’s semifinal, Buitrago converted a penalty kick in sudden death overtime to lift Manteca past Placer United, 1-0.

It was Buitrago who came up big again in the quarterfinal round up in Redding, where the Rangers edged Mad River Johnson of Trinity County, 1-0. Annisity Miller provided the assist.
