Things are rolling along pretty smoothly for the Ripon Christian boys basketball team, as they remained perfect in Southern League action with a 75-48 victory over Mariposa High Tuesday.

Ripon Christian (7-0 SL, 15-3 overall) got a huge offensive outburst from freshman Travis Vander Molen, who lead all scorers with 23. The Knights built a huge lead in the onset, but could do nothing to put Mariposa away for good. The squad would forfeit a 20-point lead early, and surrender another 20-point lead late. Finally outscoring Mariposa 24-6 in the fourth would seal the deal.

“We had a nice lead halfway through the second quarter and they came right back on us,” Ripon Christian head coach Ron Vander Molen said. “They made it a 12 point game at halftime. We extended the lead in the third and they came back at the end of that period again.

“They kept battling back on us.”

The Knights landed four players in double-figures, with John Vander Molen (18 points), Eric Broker (14 points) and Dan Vos (11 points) all finishing in double-digits.

Mariposa was led by Jason Scherf’s 14 points.

Trans Valley League

Ripon 56, Hilmar 21

The Indians didn’t have their best half offensively, but they held the Yellowjackets to just eight points in the first half on their way to a convincing Trans Valley League win Tuesday at Hilmar.

The Indians (4-2 TVL, 8-12) were led by Cole Herrin’s 14 points, while both Chase DePrue and Henk Gaaslwyk both finished with 12.

Ripon led 20-4 after the first period and never let up.

The Indians will have an off day followed by practice Thursday and Friday in preparation for the intra-city matchup with the Ripon Christian Knights Saturday at 7 p.m.
