Ripon High will not be defending its Sac-Joaquin Section Division-V Team Duals title this Saturday.

The Indians had a chance to force a three-way share of the Trans-Valley League title in Escalon Wednesday but were soundly beaten, 49-22. Hughson, which squeaked out a 37-36 win over Ripon on Jan. 16, will be the second TVL representative at Team Duals.

“We knew they were a stronger dual-meet team than us,” Ripon coach Glen White said. “They handled Hughson (42-24) and we lost to Hughson so I figured it would be a tough one.

“Our kids fought hard. We were outmatched but they went out there and fought hard.”

Escalon recorded six wins by fall, while Ripon claimed four matches overall.

Trevor Smith, the state’s No. 7-ranked 182-pounder according to The California Wrestler, made quick work of A.J. Camerena, and heavyweight David Goforth pinned Frank Martins in the opening period. Taylor Fugit stopped Josh Redding in the third period of an exciting 152-pound match. Corey Goodwin scored outpointed Austin Jones 12-2 in a majority decision at 132. Ripon 220-pounder Sam Parker dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Dominic Freesha.

Up next for the Indians is the TVL Tournament hosted by Riverbank on Feb. 9.

“As the postseason goes on we will focus on getting everyone as far as we can,” White said. “We are going to try to do our best at league.”
