During the early stages of construction of the softball fields, O.C. Jones and Sons encountered some problems at the Mistlin Sports Complex.

Some existing utility conflicts interfered with the underground infrastructure plan, causing the general engineering contractor to make a change order of over $226,000.

O.C. Jones was awarded the contract featuring the four new softball fields around the water tower – restrooms and concession facilities were also in the plans – back in July for $4.1 million. Included was a deductive change order of minus-$423,156.

At tonight’s Ripon City Council meeting, elected leaders could approve the change order as a contract amendment, revising the pact to $4.3 million.

According to City Engineer Kevin Werner, cost for the additional project cost of the change order will come from the Parks Capital Fund.

Some of items on the change order and the estimated costs are:

• Lowering existing irrigation mainline ($54,000).

• Potable water and storm drain conflicts with existing utilities ($47,000).

• Fire hydrant, gutter connections at the tower, grease interceptor and gas line ($25,000).

• Surveyor establishing control ($1,200).

• Lowering existing lines to required depths by utility companies ($86,000).

• Grade for future sidewalk at north / east field perimeter ($10,000).

The underground utilities and earth work is part of the first phase of the project at the Mistlin Sports Complex.
