Bowling for a couple hours on Saturday can help 1,191 students involved in one-on-one tutoring do better in school.

That’s because proceeds from the 14th annual Antone and Marie Raymus, Annual Bowl-A-Thon will benefit the free tutoring program offered through Give Every Child a Chance.

Last year, the community-based non-profit served 4,615 youth at 51 program locations in Manteca, Ripon, Weston Ranch, French Camp, Banta, and Escalon. They did it with 406 volunteers age 10 through 82.

Of those students, 1,191 were involved in traditional one-on-one tutoring as well as the Homework Assistance Program. There were 3,048 youth involved in After School Advantage Programs at 13 school sites. The others are in programs such as Computer Assisted Instructional Training, Employment Mentoring Program, and the Technology Outreach Program.

Just over 78 percent of the students in the program improve at least one grade level in various proficiencies such as math and language arts.

The bowl-a-thon is at the Manteca Bowl and Family Fun Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This includes 36 lanes, bowling shoes, a soft drink for each participant, and staff at no charge to GECAC.

Business-to-business challenges are being offered in categories such as, Health Care, Government, Service Agency Organization, Retail, Service/Community Club, School, Retail, House of Worship, Bank, and Youth Group.

There are also top prizes for overall highest collecting top youth team, overall top three individual students, and prizes for individual youth collectors. In addition, the school that collects the most pledges (minimum of $1,000) will receive $500 school shopping spree.

The minimum entry fee for a team (5 bowlers) is $250 and for each team member includes; two games of bowling a T-shirt, shoe rental, and one soft drink.
