Blizzards ice Liverpool behind Downum’s goals

Sierra Downum scored twice and assisted Samantha Kinard’s goal to lead the Manteca Area Soccer League’s under-14 Blizzards to a 3-1 victory over Liverpool Saturday at Woodward Park.

The 100-degree heat didn’t stop the Blizzard defense from performing well, as Kaitlyn McGriff shut out the Liverpool attack in the second half while Alex Tolman notched two saves in the first.

The goalkeeping tandem was well protected by defenders Kiana Flores, Clarissa Medrano, Gracyn Rusconi and Cecilia Arroyo. The midfield corps of Alicia Patton, Monica Martinez and Maureya May aided the defense by keeping the pressure on Liverpool’s half of the field.

In other MASL action Saturday:

United 4, Kickers 1
Anna Arriola helped United mount a sizable 3-1 halftime lead with two goals and completed the hat trick in the second. Nikkie Rodriguez accounted for United’s first goal.

Shariah Davidson worked well in the goal box to keep her team ahead and was helped by defenders Sophia Vukanovich, Espi De La Riva, Taylor Gray, Lynda Crescini and Cheynne Carter.

Strikers 6, Pink Panthers 3
Alaina Castor and Corvette Skundberg anchored the Strikers’ attack along with Allison Rachels. Dylissa Aguirre and Cierra Teicheira highlighted the defense.

Shooters 8, Liverpool 3
McKenna Balmut accounted for half of the Shooters’ scoring. Jazmin Carrillo, Leslie Chavez, Angelique Galvan and Meghan Wallace each contributed a goal to the onslaught.

Andriana Baldibia-Bejar played well on the back line, and Michaela Figueroa made several key stops at goal.

Fury 4, Breakers 1
Sophie Williams struck twice in the second half to give the Fury some breathing room, as Georgia Arriola and Morgan Gross, assisted by Monique Angel, helped the team mount a halftime lead.

Goalie Kareena Escartin recorded three saves.

Strikers 4, Inferno 0
Marissa King blasted in three goals, while Carolina Ortega added one. Goalkeeper Brittany Conjin notched the clean sheet. Taylor Hall, Ariana Folsom and Emma Broderick were other standout players for the Strikers.

Lightning Strikes 4, Cheetahs 2
Julissa Pimentel scored all of Lightning Strikes’ goals with assists coming from Madison Huthison and Josslyn Bettencourt.
Harnoor Dhaliwal played stellar defense in front of keeper Chelsey Medeiros.

Team United 3, Wildcats 3
Bryanna Moll, Kendra Campbell and Hannah Hart stiffened up on defense to help United come back from a 2-1 halftime deficit and battle to a draw.

Stephanie Mercado pitched in two goals, with the other coming from Alyssa Urteaga.

Rockets 3, Highlighters 0
Noelle Smith and McKenna Pamplin combined for the shutout, and Madison Burch led the attacking line with two goals to lead the Rockets. Kendall Wackerly scored once, and Kelley Higginson chipped in an assist.
