It’ll be perfect weather to hit the links at the Manteca Golf Course this weekend.

Sunglasses, flip-flops and shorts were the way that Tommy Farringer spent his Thursday afternoon.

In February.

An unusual spell of temperate weather that rolled through Northern California Thursday – bringing 71-degree temperatures to San Francisco and peppering the Central Valley with what felt like balmy temperatures – drove many people outdoors to enjoy the sunshine.

Farringer said he ditched his car and opted to walk down to the store after realizing that the same cold temperatures that existed last week had completely disappeared.

Since he knows they won’t stay he wants to take full advantage.

“It’s supposed to be freezing outside,” he said. “They got how many feet of snow back in Boston this week? And I’m out here in shorts and loving it. I guess those are the perks of living in California.”

And don’t expect the weather to change very much over the course of the weekend.

According to Accuweather.com, highs are expected to reach 68 degrees today and Saturday – finally starting to fall back down into the 50s by Monday. Rain is expected by Tuesday, and nighttime lows will once again fall back down into the 30s.

It’s a welcome sign for Rebecca Timpone who had planned to take a trip into the Sierra for Presidents Day. Knowing that snow is not forecasted and warmer temperatures will be the norm throughout much of Northern California, she said, will make things that much better.

“It’s hard to beat a weekend up there anyway,” she said after finishing up a tennis game on Union Road. “But then you put together a few nice days and it makes everything that much better.”

Miguel Higuera, however, is just happy that he’s finally getting a nice weekend to tackle some work around the house.

After cold and rainy periods cancelled out previous dump runs and clean-up days, Higuera said that the warmer weather was definitely welcome – even if it meant he wouldn’t get nearly as much time to relax as he had hoped for.

Just getting it done, he said, will be worth it.

“It’ll make the wife happy – that’s for sure,” he said. “And when she’s happy maybe then I’ll have a chance to relax a little bit. I’m hoping by Monday I can just kick back and watch a little TV. Maybe even leave the front door open.”

In February.
