Ripon’s Mary Carigiet 101 years young

Mary Carigiet turned 101 on Friday, but she acts some 20 years younger. She is seen with Sister Ann Venita Britto, who delivered a Valentine’s gift from her St. Anthony’s Community.

Mary Carigiet turned 101 years old on Friday, but the Ripon resident remains as spry as someone 20 years her junior.

Born in Utah, Carigiet has resided in Lockeford, Acampo, Stockton and finally Ripon with her late husband Ed.  Both worked together in operating the Macaroni Factory in Stockton. She lives by herself in rural Ripon, where she tends to her own garden.

Looking younger throughout her life wasn’t always good, she recalled.  When she was old enough to date, the adults in her life saw her as just the kid sister.  At 21, and able to vote, she was again questioned for her age.

She didn’t marry until she was 45, she chuckled.

Carigiet has always been credited for her humor and her love for hugs.

Longevity, she says, is in her family tree.

Carigiet is having two celebrations this weekend – one with a cousin, Lawrence Perino, hosting a party for her at Angelino’s Restaurant in Stockton.

Aside from her time at the Macaroni Factory, Carigiet has a history that includes tending row crops and picking cherries in rural Stockton.

“We moved here (Ripon) because Ed’s daughter Sylvia Franscella lives just down the road,” she said.  “Ed helped me in the kitchen and I told him he didn’t have to dry the dishes.  Men in my family don’t do dishes.”

Since his death Carigiet has had one “scary” situation when two men who came through her front gate offering to do low price repairs on her ranch house.  While one showed her supposed problems with her home – leading her into the backyard – the other went into her bedroom and stole all of the jewelry her husband had given her during their life together.
