WESTON RANCH – The Weston Ranch tennis team picked up its first Valley Oak League win of the season at home Thursday, 8-7, over Manteca.

Vy Hoang fell 3-6, before picking up 6-2 and 6-0 wins, while Nicole Bowen swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0.

“I was proud of Nicole today,” Cougars head coach Jason Furtado said. “She did a great job.”

No. 3 Gloria Gonzalez fell in all three of her matches, 0-6.

On the doubles docket, Vanessa Paez and Ly Hoang won 10-4, 10-6, while Christina Pokay and Vanessa Catalina fell 8-10, 7-10.

“We played great,” Furtado said. “We are pretty evenly matched, so it was a good thing that we came out on top.”

Weston Ranch (1-1 VOL, 2-1 overall) heads to Oakdale Tuesday.

Sonora 9, Sierra 6

It was a rough day for the T’Wolves, who were struggling with an illness bug, but despite having to forfeit 2.5 points, Sierra still showed well against the always-tough Wildcats.

No. 1 Ann McFerran looked good in winning two of three matches, and No. 1 doubles tandem Jena Anderson and Stephanie Vanni were outstanding in sweeping their matches.

Vannida Nguyen won a match, while Ashley Bergman fell thrice.

Mary Ann Baker and Kelly Fuentes dropped both of their doubles matches.

Sierra (0-1 VOL) hosts Ceres at East Union Tuesday.

Oakdale 13.5, East Union 1.5

Coming off its second VOL win to start the season, a 10-5 victory of over Central Valley Wednesday, the Lancers ran into the senior laden Mustangs and fell despite solid efforts all around.

Doubles tandem Klasey Kachalkin and Shalane Jackson turned in a 10-8 win for the Lancers’ lone points.

“Obviously, when you face Oakdale, that’s another notch,” EU head coach Julia Bylow said. “But in tennis, the scores aren’t also reflective of how the kids played.

“I was very pleased with our overall play. We had a great attitude and played with a lot of heart. It was hot and windy, and we were sluggish at first. But we came on strong.”
