Call it a concerted effort.

On Tuesday, the Manteca Garden Club got a little grimy in the name of civic beautification.

The group consisting of club President Linda Silverman, Hank Wiegel, Rich Silverman, Sandi Larson, and Jan Epperson installed hedges to the newly designed planter in the landscaped area just south of Yosemite Avenue at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing in downtown Manteca.

Wiegel, who is the club’s chairman of projects, designed the wooden frames spelling out “Manteca” while the City of Manteca crew cleared out some of the sod last Thursday.

City employees were scheduled to return to add some of the finishing touches, including the installation of decomposed granite.

According to Linda Silverman, the Garden Club worked in conjunction with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Manteca Convention & Visitors Bureau on this project.

The results?

“The city got a lot of bang for its buck,” she said.
