Special evening gown fitting for Ripon High seniors were the order of the day Sunday at Marissa’s Closet in the center of downtown in preparation for the March 16 Sober Graduation Fashion Show.  It was billed as a “dress party” for the 17 and 18-year-old girls.

There will be 33 gals and 30 guys scheduled to take part in the fundraising event in the Ripon High School multi-purpose auditorium.

More than 2,000 evening gowns are on hangers and racks through the recently restored non-profit that has served thousands of girls in the past several years – many who wouldn’t have been able to afford a gown for their special graduation event.

The weekend presented an unexpected challenge for the dress shop staffers when the weight of the gowns pulled metal shelving out of the walks.  Volunteer construction workers responded to the incident and secured the shelving.  Three of them with a total weight of some 600 pounds hung from the remounted shelving to make sure the dresses wouldn’t again fall to the floor.

Ripon High School cheerleaders were at the store and personally rehung the countless evening gowns back onto their display racks.

While Marissa’s Closet is taking care of providing the gowns, the guys’ tuxedos are coming from Formal Connection, the Men’s Warehouse and Vitos.

The Manteca Unified School District’s Fashion Merchandising ROP Classes are having a similar fashion show on March 2 at the Sierra High School Gym with Marissa’s and other merchants providing the evening wear.

The tickets for the Ripon show are $10 each for adults.  Susan Robison may be contacted for ticket purchases at 404-6424.  Some 450 are expected to attend the high school show.

Marissa’s Closet is planning its annual fundraiser dinner dance April 27, at the Ripon Community Center complete with a silent auction. Tickets for the dinner dance are $25.  Volunteers are needed to help support the Closet in its continued support of students throughout the region.
