The first of its kind Trivia Challenge is planned for Saturday night to raise funds for Ripon Christian High School’s  annual trek to the nation’s capital in April.  The school’s Close up Club is sponsoring the contest.

To date there are some 40 adults and students signed up for the 7 p.m., two hour event and there is still time for more to register, according to veteran history and government teacher Jerry Terpsma.

Terpsma taught at Ripon Christian for some 45 years long charged with leading his students to Washington, D.C., in years past for the educational experiences of their lifetimes.  He said he currently has seven tables of six competitors each from younger students, and high school and to one woman who is in her 80s.

Nearly 70 juniors and seniors are signed up for the D.C. trip. They will be joined by chaperones bringing the total to 91 flying out April 13 on the five-day trip.

Contestants are asked for a donation of $25 each to enter the trivia contest. The winner will receive cash prizes.  Those teamed up around the first place table will each receive $80 money cards.  The contestants coming in second are going to get $40 each around their table and the third place $25.

Terpsma said he hopes to see the trivia challenge become an annual event at the Ripon school which is being held this year at Calvary Reformed Church activity center on the corner of Vera Avenue and Second Street.

There will be some 30 multiple choice questions authored by Terpsma making up the two-hour-long scenario.  But first, there will be a selection of homemade desserts along with coffee and water for the participants.

While in Washington, the Ripon students are scheduled to take part in 15 seminars and workshops along with visiting the Capitol and Congressman Jeff Denham’s office on Capitol Day.  They will take in a special program at Ford’s Theater; visit the Holocaust Museum and several of the Smithsonian Museums.

Anyone wanting to join in the trivia fun is urged to call Terpsma at 543-2695 or use his email address of  The deadline is Thursday afternoon.
