Things have been looking good for the Weston Ranch softball squad.

The Cougars continued their perfect opening of the 2013 season, using the big-inning to handle a visiting Patterson High 4-1 Friday in nonleague action.

Weston Ranch (4-0) got a dominant pitching performance from Arianna Hernandez and a four-run third inning would be all the Cougars needed. Elysia Hernandez capped off the Cougars huge inning with a perfect sacrifice-squeeze play to plate Naomi Thurman and pad Weston Ranch’s lead to three.

Thurman also had a RBI double in the inning as well.

Vanessa Contreras led the Cougars with a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 and driving in a run.

Mia Thurman, Vanessa Morataya, Lydia McDonald and Thurman all collected hits for Weston Ranch.

“It was an all around good game for us,” Weston Ranch head coach Janelle Bauer said. “Our defense was strong again today.”

Hernandez went the distance for the Cougars, striking out three and scattering six hits.

East Union 11, Ben Holt Academy 0

In Stockton, the Lancers were able to stay perfect on the year, blasting Benjamin Holt Academy with a two-hit shutout Friday at Arnaiz Field.

East Union (4-0) had four players with multiple-hits, getting two hits apiece from Jillian Costa, Alejandra Roscon, Laura Gann and Michelle Castro. Both Gann and Castro had two RBI, while Roscon drove in three in the blowout.

Savina Brandi and Castron combined for the shutout, holding Ben. Holt to a pair of hits and without a scoring threat.

East Union will get a stiffer challenge Wednesday when they visit Tracy to take on the Tracy Bulldogs.
