On the surface it’s just another community dinner hosted by a service club where people from all different social circles will show up for a good meal and a good time.

But when it comes to the Manteca Lions Club Calamari and Pasta Dinner being planned for Saturday, Sept. 19, all of the proceeds from the $20 tickets will go to benefit the scholarship fund that the organization distributes to each of the district’s high schools.

“It’s an event that sells out every year – the community has been very supportive of what we’re doing,” said longtime Lion member Dave Macedo.

“People know that The Lions Club is a non-profit organization and we’re here to help the community in any way we can – from the Eye-Mobile to the scholarship funds to landscaping the properties of elderly residents that aren’t able to do it themselves anymore.

“It’s all about giving back, and this dinner makes that possible for us to achieve.”

On Thursday the group met for their first September meeting at Perko’s to discuss some of the details of the evening that kicks off at the Manteca Senior Center with a no-host bar at 6 p.m. The 7 p.m. dinner include a hearty helping of calamari and pasta – accented by drawings for a handful of valuable donated prizes aimed to spice up the night.

In the end Macedo knows that the night will be a chance for people to come out and have a good time – noting that ticket sales have already been going very well. He also knows that it’s designed to support a higher cause.

“These scholarships help kids achieve their dreams,” Macedo said. “Coming out and supporting this event is a way to help keep those scholarships going, and we’re thrilled that the community has supported us the way they have.”

The dinner – which starts at 7 p.m. after an hour of no-host cocktails – takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Manteca Senior Center located at 295 Cherry Lane.
