It was all fun and splashing at the pool for the Sierra Timberwolves, who beat cross-town rival Manteca in both boys and girls Valley Oak League swimming meets Friday at Sierra High.

The Timberwolves rolled easily in girls action, 112-56, and the boys had little trouble winning, 96-72. It was the VOL opener for both clubs, and needless to say one was more pleased than the other.

“Today was a good start to the season for us,” Manteca head coach Elyce Silva said. “Over half of our swimmers are brand new, so it was nice to get a meet under our belt.

“Sierra puts a great team in the water every year and their talent and depth was just too much for us.”

Manteca did get a pair of wins from junior Stephen Ruble and freshman Austin Welch took first in the 100-back and second in the 200-free.

Manteca will be back in the water Wednesday against Sonora, while the Timberwolves will meet up with the East Union Lancers Friday.

Sonora 105, East Union 63 (G)

Sonora 112, East Union 57 (B)

The Sonora Wildcats asserted themselves as one of the VOL’s programs to be reckoned with, handling East Union with ease on both fronts Friday.

There were some bright spots for the Lancers’ season opener, as a pair of standouts secured an Sac-Joaquin Section Championships invite after posting section qualifying times.

Elija Salas and Janelle Macedo are both set in one event, as Salas secured a berth in the 100-back and Macedo in the 200-IM.

Kimmy Lamar took down the 50-free, Alexandria Scott won the 100-fly and Matthew Duran won the 500-free.
