Ripon High’s girls soccer team ended one streak while continuing another in its Trans-Valley League opener at Escalon Wednesday.

The Indians ended a four-match winless streak against Escalon dating back to 2010 with their 2-0 victory, which also marked their fourth consecutive triumph with a shutout.

“It’s a golden win anytime you can go up to Escalon and get one,” Ripon assistant coach Bryce Perkins said.

This was one Ripon, now 4-2 overall after dropping its first two nonleague contests, had to grind out.

Jessica Carmona’s impressive scoring run in the 49th minute broke the ice. Mace Christian sent her a through pass to the left side. From there, Carmona worked her way toward the middle of Escalon’s penalty area and juked the final defender before delivering the go-ahead score.

Ripon got the insurance goal in the 60th minute. Brianna Mortimer blasted a direct kick from 40 yards out, and Brooklyn Joachim got in position to knock it in from near the goal area. Tia Sidtikun had a chance to break it open minutes later but was thwarted by the Escalon defense.

“It was a pretty even game,” said Perkins, noting that both teams took 12 shots. “The majority of the game was played in the middle of the field, but I think as the game wore on our bench may have been the difference.”

Goalie Yvette Serrano had four saves. Perkins singled out underclassmen Sarah Alves and Zaire Davis for their work on the defensive line.

The Indians hope to keep rolling Friday when Hughson visits Mistlin Park.
