TRACY – Why worry about the soaring prices at the pump?

Chances are those looking into the 100-percent electric Nissan Leaf are thinking just that.

The 2013 model was redesigned with improved aerodynamics, providing better mileage thanks to the rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries that store and provide 24 kWh of electricity.

“It’s electric, but you can still have fun driving it while saving at the pumps,” said Andrew ‘Drew’ Wadahara, sales and leasing consultant at Tracy Nissan.

The motor provides 187 lb-ft of torque and 107 horsepower. A single charge could mean 116 miles on the road based on one’s driving habits. There’s also no lag, no revving-up or shifting gears – the Leaf is ready to go.

A flat, aerodynamic underbody and rear diffuser enhances the performance, allowing air to flow smoothly underneath the Leaf. Couple that with the sporty rear spoiler that’s used to reduce turbulence and drag.

The 3.6 kW onboard charger now sits in front of the Leaf rather than the rear, thus, improving cargo room to 24 cubic feet. Compare that to last year’s model with just 9.5 cubic feet of space.

Wadahara pointed out that the onboard charger accepts power from a 220-volt outlet or 110-volt household outlet.

The Leaf is equipped with a regenerative braking system, four-wheel  power-assisted vented disc brakes, and safety features such as the Nissan advanced air bag system – included here are front seat-mounted, side-impact supplemental airbags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental airbags – four-wheel anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitoring system, vehicle dynamic control and traction control system, to name a few.

Surprisingly, the Leaf not only rides smoothly – quietly, of course – but is also designed for comfort. “The front seats are contoured to fit one’s body,” Wadahara said.

He added: “It’s also super spacious for those sitting in the back seat.”

The Leaf is the established leader in the “no gas, no tailpipe” zero-emission era and is available at Tracy Nissan, 3195 N. Naglee Road.
