East Union suffered its first loss of the Valley Oak League season Thursday, falling to Sonora in a close 206-209 decision at Mountain Springs Golf & Country Club.

The Lancers fell to 3-1 as Sonora stands as the lone undefeated team in the league, but nothing is close to being settled as East Union has yet to host the Wildcats at the more familiar Manteca Park Golf Course. The title may be decided in the VOL tournament.

“The guys didn’t play bad, it’s just a tricky course,” East Union coach Dennis Wells said. “They know their course well, and we had a couple two- and three-putts that cost us. I’m not too unhappy; we still get to see them at our course.”

Will Brink edged Sonora’s Billy Kiriluk for low-medalist honors, earning a one-stroke win with his even-par 36. Zach Couch (41), Jordan Lund (43), Kyle Davis (44) and Eric Lewis (45) made up the rest of East Union’s final score.

Oakdale 211, Manteca 237

At Manteca Park Golf Course, the Buffaloes (1-3, 2-5 overall) dropped a must-win match against Oakdale, which graduated much of its top talent from the 2012 VOL championship squad.

“I was disappointed with our scores and the players knew they played well below what they are capable of, especially on our home course” Manteca coach Dave Fontanilla said.

Oakdale’s Issac Rellamas paced all players with a one-over 38. Individual scorers for Manteca were Justin Morrish (44), Ray Tinnin (45), Davey Tolbert (45), Brandon Ramirez (46), Gus LaDue (57) and Donal Kingston (57).

Ripon 177, Riverbank 284

At Jack Tone Golf Course, sophomore Nick Sharp completed an impressive week with his even-par 31 on Thursday.

None of the Indians scored worse than 40. Jack Brierly (35), Robby Figeroid (36), Kyle Head (37) and Nathan Suender (38) factored into the scoring, while Luke Jones played bogey golf with a dropped 40.
