FRENCH CAMP – Deputies say the man accused of killing his longtime girlfriend told them it was an accidental shooting.

And neighbors who shared what they heard and saw believe two of her young daughters may have seen their mother shot to death.

Juan Valdez, 37, was arrested Friday night by San Joaquin County Sheriff deputies for the murder of his girlfriend Gloria Castro in their home in the 10200 block of South Janet Road.

Deputies were first called to the home on Friday regarding a domestic disturbance. Neighbors then called to report gunfire as the deputies were en route.

When officers arrived they discovered Castro shot in the home she shared with Valdez and their three kids. She had been shot once in the torso.

Deputies said Valdez was standing outside the home and confessed it was an accidental shooting.

Valdez was arrested and charged with murder. He remains in the San Joaquin County Jail.

Neighbors said they heard yelling. They saw two of the victim’s girls run into the house. Then, moments later, they heard a gunshot. About five minutes later the two girls ran out and down the street to their grandmother’s home some two blocks way.

Neighbors believe the two girls, ages 9 and 5, may have witnessed their mother’s death. They also say the father was short-tempered.
