Lucas Garcia and Justin Ontiveros helped East Union jump out to a one-run lead against heralded prospect Jonah Wesley and host Tracy High Saturday at Monte Vista Middle School.

It was Wesley’s show the rest of the way, as the senior southpaw struck out 15 in a four-hitter won by the Bulldogs, 4-1.

“Jonah Wesley got better and stronger as the game progressed, he really got into a groove,” East Union coach Dan Triglia said. “It was a well-played game for both sides, very competitive. It was just what we needed going into our (Valley Oak League opener) in Oakdale (today).”

Ontiveros (2 for 3) was the standout for East Union (4-3). After Garcia’s leadoff hit in the first, he blasted an RBI double to give the Lancers the early advantage. Tracy (5-3) tied it in the third and surged ahead for good with two runs in the fifth.

Ontiveros was also EU’s starting pitcher, going five innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits.

“He’s had limited action from the bump so far this year and he came in and did a very good job for us,” Triglia said.

Ripon 6, Calaveras 1

Caleb Rogers set the tone for host Ripon as both pitcher and hitter. He drove in the game’s first run with a double and plated the next as the Indians (7-5) took an early 2-0 lead. Rogers also struck out six in six innings of two-hit ball.

Scott Robison was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
