Give Every Child A Chance is hoping to bring the Teen Summit to Ripon.

But that could be another year away.

According to program director Oscar Munguia, GECAC was all set to conduct the inaugural Teen Summit today at Park View School. But that event was canceled.

“We only had 40 kids signed up and we needed 100,” he said on Monday.

Munguia indicated that this Teen Summit, once off and running, will be modeled after the one held each October at Manteca Unified’s Golden West School. It’s there that some 300 students from the district’s 23 school sites attend this special one-day GECAC function made possible by sponsors such as Kaiser Permanente during their fall break.

They learned about issues that affect today’s youth, from bullying to obesity.

Sessions, for example, included cooking like an Olympic champion, a soldier’s life, cyber bullying, and even free Tae Kwon Do lessons.

The Teen Summit planned for Ripon would be comprised of students from Ripon Elementary, Ripona, Weston, Colony Oak and Park View schools.

“We’re going to make a strong effort to really promote next year’s Teen Summit,” said Munguia.
