Manteca High’s boys swimming team nearly swept three of the final four events and swept 100-yard free style to overcome a talented Ripon team 88-78 last Friday.

The Buffaloes evened their Valley Oak League mark to 3-3 and used greater numbers and an inspired effort to do so. Ripon filled at least three lanes in just one event but did well to make it a close meet. Ripon’s girls prevailed, 89.5-70.5.

“I could not be more proud of the way everyone competed today,” Manteca coach Elyce Silva said. “Ripon always puts a superb team in the water and that really brought out the best in all my swimmers. All of the races were close and there were definitely some tight finishes that could have gone either way. This was a great win for the boys and one they should be really proud of. It was a complete team effort; every point counted and everyone contributed.

Stephen Ruble was the top points contributor for Manteca. He won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay. Sterling Roberts won the 100 breast stroke, and freshman Austin Welch captured the 100 backstroke.

Amanda Christensen was in on Manteca’s only two wins in the girls competition, prevailing in the 200 freestyle relay and 100 backstroke. Kaile Hunt was the runner-up in the 100 free and 100 back.
