Editor, Manteca Bulletin:

The East Union High School Kiwins service club completed a service project to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank, and we have many people to thank.  The fifth annual Dodge Ball Tournament open to East Union students was our project.  This year four teams entered, and we raised $308 for the Second Harvest Food Bank from entry fees. Thirty two students at East Union paid ten dollars each to be a member of a co-ed team of eight players.  Ten Kiwins helped to run the tournament from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 23.

We wish to thank Ben Cantu, Jim Stone, and George Montross from the Manteca Kiwanis Club, our sponsors, for helping to referee the six matches in the tournament. Our other referee was Mike Mallory the Director of Second Harvest Food Bank.  We appreciate his encouragement and help with this project. East Union High School head custodian Gordon Austin insured the facilities at the Dalben Center were ideal for the players and spectators.  We also appreciate the enthusiastic morning announcements from Willie Herrera Jr. the Lancers head football coach, and the encouragement and help of our faculty adviser Eryn Bowers. Finally, our hats off to Miguel Duran the project chairperson for this event.  His diligence and organizational skills inspired the four teams who entered to get all the required forms completed on time.

Carole and Scott Reed of Regal Signs supplied three sets of eight engraved Olympic style medals for the first through third place teams.  We also thank the Manteca Bulletin for publishing our press release before the tournament, and for sending Bulletin photographer Hime Romero to cover the event in a photo spread.

The four teams entered in the tournament played a round robin format that guaranteed each team three matches. At the end of round robin play the first place team was undefeated, and two teams squared off in the final match of the tournament for second place.  This year the championship team was captained by Justin Nieto.  The second place team was captained by Alex Hernandez. The third place team was captained by Jared McCall.  Our thanks to the other team in the tournament captained by Bhavan Dhillon.
