COLTON  (AP) — Authorities in San Bernardino County say a pit bull was shot and killed after it attacked and critically injured a 74-year-old woman then went after police officers who were trying to help her.

A statement released by Colton police Sunday says Margarita Negrete underwent surgery for head wounds after her family pit bull attacked her in her backyard Saturday night.

The pit bull had already killed another family dog and was attacking the woman as she lay on the ground when police officers arrived.

The statement says the dog turned on police when they tried to get Negrete away from it, so they shot and killed the dog.
