STOCKTON — East Union had a chance to beat Bear Creek, needing to connect a field goal in the waning seconds.

Initially, the Lancers were lined up for a 37-yard try, but four consecutive penalties moved the ball up to inside the 5.

The Bruins then blocked the kick, thus, preserving a 7-6 non-league victory.

“Right now, our problems are fixable,” East Union coach Carlos Herrera said.

He was proud of his team’s play, particularly on defense where linebacker Paul Fajardo led the charge. Herrera also praised his freshmen, Rene Delgado and Rodrigo Alavarez.

East Union’s only score came early in the game on a quarterback keeper by Steve Gigli.

Bear Creek went with the big play, scoring on a bomb prior to the intermission.

Herrera, who saw his team drop to 0-2, has hope that his squad will soon play together as a cohesive unit.

“Winning is a part of a process,” he added.

Alex Martinez threw touchdown passes of 57, 23 and 13 to Joe Trout, Eric Ceja and BJ Odell, respectively, as the Buffaloes (2-0) worked from a 13-12 halftime deficit to secure the win.

Trout scored on a two-yard run in the second and finished with 62 yards on 17 carries.

Martinez finished the night 11 of 14 for 205 yards.

“It was great to see different people step up,” Manteca head coach Eric Leil said. “Alex Martinez was asked to throw the ball this week and he responded.”

Martinez spread the love around, as Danny Gouveia finished with 64 yards, Odell finished with 61 yards receiving, and Trout grabbed 57 more.

“Joe Trout was huge this week,” Leil said. “He did a fantastic job running the ball and playing defense.

“It was a good team effort, but we’re still improving and have a lot to work on this week.”
