People who drive or walk around railroad crossing gates are going to be the focus of “Operation Lifesaver” Wednesday morning when Union Pacific Railroad and the Manteca Police Department join forces to make a difference and hopefully save lives.

Union Pacific’s Presidential Train – with several dome cars – will be making up to 23 runs on the main line between Airport Way and Moffatt Boulevard between 8:45 and 10:15 a.m. Traffic officers will be ready to hand out citations to motorists and walkers alike who drive or walk around the warning gates.  It is illegal to trespass on the railroad right-of-way.

The train will take aboard officers and city officials on Moffat Boulevard at the Calla Crossing who are going to be witnessing the everyday violations first hand.

The purpose of the operation is to increase the awareness of the dangers associated with people who drive or walk around the down railroad gates, trespass on the tracks in addition to those who place a variety of items on the tracks.

There will be officers from Manteca, Lathrop and Ripon as well as Union Pacific, Burlington Northern and other police agencies in Manteca helping with the enforcement of violators.

Manteca Police spokesman Rex Osborn said the event is designed to be educational .
