Ripon Police Acting Sergeant Steve Meece and four volunteer VIPS members were thanked by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for their efforts in stemming drunk driving in a multi-county awards ceremony for more than 150 officers in the Community Center on Wednesday.

Meece was lauded for his 17 DUI arrests last year taking inebriated drivers off of Ripon streets before they caused a tragedy.  He was given another 10851 award pin – the code for DUI.

The four members of the VIPS force were credited for their support roles in standing behind the sworn officers in the field.  The volunteers serve without pay and can always be seen at the DUI check points where they are engaged in administrative duties as well as serving as runners taking driver’s licenses to the check point command post officer.

The four who accepted the plaque included Rich Searcy, Jim Harris, Connie Goddard and Don Rowe.  Searcy has made sure the officers working the cone line of motorists have water, soft drinks and food when they are able to take a break from their duties.

The officers working a DUI check point are on duty for seven hours in usually cold weather as they make contact with countless motorists, detaining some, writing citations to others and sending cars to tow yards when the drivers are found without licenses to operate their vehicles.

Searcy has gone the extra mile setting up a barbecue to cook hamburgers and hotdogs for the working officers and to the surprise of Manteca and Tracy officers who say they have never been treated so well when helping another agency with its DUI enforcement.
