It was a full moon Friday night – not a good omen for motorists driving into the North Main Street DUI checkpoint cone zone where two were arrested for drinking and driving and three others had their vehicles impounded.

One of the two DUI suspects arrested allegedly had an alcohol level of more than three times the legal limit.

Sgt. Jodie Estarziau was in charge of the assignment, reporting that 532 vehicles went through the checkpoint in front of Golden West Elementary School in the 1000 block of the main north-south arterial through the city.  Some 30 vehicles were screened by officers in the southbound lanes of the roadway.  There was also one criminal arrest resulting from the checkpoint, she added.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member Ken Sanders fired up a barbecue on the sidewalk and cooked hotdogs to give the officers something hot to eat along with the beans and other foods in the police department’s trailer that was stationed the center of the street.

Sgt. Estarziau noted that there were a total of 32 vehicles screened in the stops and 11 field sobriety tests (FST) administered throughout the seven hour checkpoint action.  Three motorists were cited for driving with suspended licenses and another four had no license at all.

Estarziau voiced her appreciation to the two reserves officers – Steve Harris and Dave Jones – who volunteered to work the checkpoint interviewing drivers coming through the cone line and for the teen Explorers who worked through the night.

There were two motorcycle officers and one black and white patrol car assigned as chase vehicles to chase down drivers who blatantly avoided the checkpoint.
