3 more outlets on way to Manteca by Black Friday

Three more outlet stores have inked deals to locate in The Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley.

Manteca Councilman Vince Hernandez confirmed that Craig Realty working with center developers has secured three retailers, that are in the process of preparing to open stores in Manteca before Black Friday. Developer Poag & McEwen has submitted plans to the city to convert at least one of the spaces for the three stores.

Hernandez noted the first of the three stores will make a formal announcement in the coming weeks. The councilman said the city had been told negotiations are underway with an additional three outlets that would open in 2014.

“Things are starting to move again,” Hernandez said.

There are currently three outlet stores at the center anchored by Bass Pro Shops. They are Vans, Guess, and Banana Republic. There is space for about three dozen outlet stores as well as pads for up to eight additional restaurants.

Hernandez said the decision to move forward with a Yosemite Visitors Center has piqued interest among retailers. Poag & McEwen is getting ready to build a large public restroom facility to serve Yosemite visitors who would travel to the center to catch buses to Yosemite Valley. It is part of a plan being implemented to limit vehicles access to the national park. The Manteca Visitors & Convention Bureau would operate a Yosemite Visitors Center that may also be manned by a park ranger to share with visitors what they can expect in the national park.

Hernandez said it is part of a city strategy to tap into the pocketbooks of some 800,000 Yosemite-bound tourists that pass through Manteca on the 120 Bypass each year.

San Francisco is the No. 1 starting point for international and domestic tourists who access Yosemite.

A national parks study noted tourism dollars associated with Yosemite supported 4,600 jobs in 2010. The report indicated 52 percent of the $354.7 million spent went to lodging, food, and beverage operations while 28 percent went to retail stores with 10 percent going to amusements and entertainment. Rounding off the list was gas and local transportation at 7 percent and groceries at 2 percent.

A California tourism study shows that the typical foreign tourist visiting Yosemite is from Asia and spends an average of $5,000 per person while they are here.
