Yok Jing Ma and Angel Tejada’s Cinderella run in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Doubles Tournament came to an Friday morning at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.

The Manteca High tandem did go down with a fight, however dropping a two-plus-hour long match to No. 2-seeded Alick Liang and Gurman Bains of Ceres, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6.

“It was extremely competitive throughout,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “The Ceres team won the big points when they counted the most, and that really was the difference.”

Ma and Tejada came up a win short of being the first Manteca doubles team to reach the finals since Yassen Aniss and Arnie Morales did so in 2009. They opened the section tourney with a two-set win over third-seeded Evan Harling and Jacob Lampi of Bella Vista on Thursday, then got past Vanden’s pesky pair of Patrick Dazo and Jose Arvisu in the quarterfinal.

Ma, a sophomore, is part of two Valley Oak League doubles championships and a two-time section tournament qualifier for two straight seasons. His pairing with Tejada, a senior who has played tennis competitively for less than two years, would seem odd because of Tejada’s relative inexperience.

Fontana was glad to have put them together.

“Yok can look at this as an opportunity to get better and advance even farther in his next two years,” Fontana said. “As for Angel, I can’t say anything more about somebody who picked up tennis last February. In 16 months he became VOL champion and a section semifinalist. It shows you what hard work could do. It was definitely a good way to end his senior year”.
