For the first two games Thursday at Sierra High, it was hard to distinguish between the Timberwolves and Mustangs. Both teams played fast-paced, hard-hitting volleyball, and both teams earned hard-fought victories.

But after fighting tooth-and-nail to a 12-13 disadvantage in Game 3, the toll of a three-game week against top-flight competition seemed to set in for Sierra, and Oakdale took advantage.

The Mustangs surrendered just three more T’Wolf points in the third stanza and won the match going away, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 25-13.

Jaci Powell was credited with 23 kills, but the senior was never more lethal than at the end of Game 1. Oakdale fought from behind the entire game to make it 19-19 before Powell sent home a pin-point tip finish that lit a fire under her teammates all the way to the finish line.

“Jaci will do everything,” Sierra head coach Tevani Liotard said. “She saw us all up, that was a great move. So I just told them, ‘Hey, you’ve got to give her credit for reading the coverage.’”

Undeterred, Sierra responded with another gritty performance in Game 2, the difference being that Jaslynn Liotard (six kills, six blocks) and Alysia Atkins (13 kills) had the last laugh.

Sierra took a quick lead in Game 3 but fell behind just as quickly. Liotard’s boisterous stuff block made it 7-8, and both sides traded blows until Oakdale started to run away with it.

After four games against Sonora Monday and five more against Ceres Tuesday, the Timberwolves appeared to run out of gas.

“You could see it,” Liotard said. “There were those long, long rallies in the second game too. At one point I had to call a timeout just to tell them to breathe.”

Modesty Rodriguez finished with 18 assists and 10 service points (three aces), and Chelsea Bereta had seven digs and eight service points.

Michelle Arroyo went down with a rolled ankle in Game 4, but not before she had picked up four digs and four more kills.

Juli Powell had 20 digs, Domi Powell had a block, and Jackee Lee was credited with 45 assists and five aces for the Mustangs.
