FRENCH CAMP — A French Camp woman was shot Sunday morning while sitting behind the wheel of her car and then drove herself to a hospital with three bullet wounds in the upper part of her body.

A San Joaquin County Sheriff’s spokesman said the 21-year-old was reportedly dropping off a friend shortly before 1 a.m. when a vehicle pulled up next to hers, a passenger exited and the shots were fired as the woman attempted to drive away.  She fled the scene of the shooting with the gunman in pursuit of her vehicle.  A witness described her effort as “heroic” as she was trying to prevent the gunman from also shooting her 18-year-old sister and a male friend in the back seat of the car.

The attack occurred in the 300 block of East Krell Lane near McKinley Avenue.  She was reportedly in critical condition in an area hospital.

The Sheriff’s Department described the suspect vehicle as a tan in color, Jeep Cherokee, with shiny rims.  Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Les Garcia said the assailant remains at large and is asking members of the public with information about the shooting to call (209) 468-4400.

South County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.  Citizens may remain anonymous by calling 823-4636.
