Pete Callas knows the thrill of being on a winning team. The former pro baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies organization, who is principal of Weston Ranch High, has put together a team of 28 teachers for the inaugural school year that starts August 18.

Members of the Manteca Unified School District board voted Tuesday 4-3 to keep their taxpayer–financed “lifetime” benefits after one opponent begged them to abolish the perks. The board, without comment, struck down a motion that would have abolished retirement benefits, except for those currently vested or for those who will be vested upon completing their terms. Marjorie Thomas, Jack Coldren and Joe Widmer voted against the benefits that now have the potential of costing taxpayers $890,000 for three board members who have qualified so far.

Leonard Taylor is going to have to wait a while longer before he finds out whether he will be reinstated as Manteca’s police chief. City Clerk Karen Mathews said that Taylor’s reinstatement cannot be acted on during this afternoon’s special City Council meeting because it is not listed on the meeting’s agenda.

Fill ‘er up may become a phrase of the past if the gasoline shortage continues at its present pace. Already in Manteca some service stations have had to implement gas rationing to as little as five gallons per customer while others have resorted to limiting their hours of operation to meet daily demands with the amount of petrol available from suppliers.

The “hot water” problem with water temperatures of 140 to 160 degrees in Manteca’s controversial drainage ditch has apparently been solved. It was solved when it was announced today that the Spreckels Sugar Company plans to construct a cooling tower at the firm’s Manteca factory.

May 21, 1953

A drive is currently on to get signers on petitions advocating piping of the irrigation and drainage ditches in Manteca. The drive was launched last week by the Manteca Safety Council and more than 500 names have already been obtained. The petitions will be presented to the directors of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District at 1:30 on the afternoon of June 2.

May 27, 1943

J. F. Bisig, principal of the local high school, was selected at a meeting in Stockton last week to serve on a committee to organize a San Joaquin County War Chest. Heading the county committee is James A. Corson, president of the Stockton United Community War Chest, and was to set up a permanent organization in connection with President Roosevelt’s National War Fund program.

May 25, 1933

Three local people were bitten by a dog infected with rabies last week and are to be given the Pasteur treatment at the clinic of the San Joaquin Local Health District in Stockton. The report on the dead dog’s head from the University of California was that the animal had rabies. Chief of Police Tom Brockman announced that beginning today all stray dogs would be killed.

Everything is ready for the big Pentecostal celebration, which begins tomorrow and will last until Sunday night, by the Portuguese societies of Manteca. The committee in charge has worked hard and say they expect fully 5,000 people will be here Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Word comes from Hayward, San Leandro, San Jose and the Sacramento Valley towns that large delegations are coming. The Manteca Band will lead the parade. Miss Carmina Coehlo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Coehlo of East Yosemite Avenue, has been chosen queen for the occasion.

The Calla School picnic, which was to have been held today, has been postponed owing to the illness of the teacher, Miss Fink, and of Mrs. Stuart Moore, who are both being threatened with scarletina.
