RIPON – It didn’t take Erik Anaya more than five minutes before he found the back of the net and give Ripon its early lead over the Hughson Huskies Wednesday afternoon.

And by the time the Indians were prepping for their trot off the field for the break at the 40th minute, Jared Berglund booted a second goal that gave Ripon a 2-0 lead that allowed them to rebound from two straight losses.

“It was nice after being shut out against Escalon and being able to come out and score in the first five minutes – that was good to see,” Ripon head coach Jaime DeBruyn said. “The wind was a good advantage today, and we had the wind the first half and capitalized twice and then our guys hunkered down the second half defensively.

“Tim (Combley) had a good game for us at keeper, and they were a physical team that held their ground and made us contest every shot that we took and every pass that we made.”

Escalon 3, Ripon Christian 0
Despite giving up three goals to TVL power Escalon in the first half, Ripon Christian managed to establish its brand of defense during the second half on Wednesday – shutting down the Cougars in the second half.

According to Coach Keith Terpsma, Escalon hit three beautiful crosses in the first half alone but couldn’t handle the midfield play of Scott Faure, Tim Hocksama, Jonathan Sanny, and Mark Van Spronsen in the second half.

“We played well-rounded soccer,” Terpsma said. “We had good midfield control as the ball was pushed over to Escalon’s half a lot during the game, and aside from those three crosses we were able to shut them out in the second half.”
